Principal’s Welcome
Welcome to Loreto Secondary School St Michael’s Navan website!
“Women in time to come will do much” – Mary Ward
Mary Ward spoke these words around 1615 in her legendary “Verity Speech” to defend the capabilities of women against critics who claimed they were weak, fragile, and unable to achieve great things. While we now live in a world vastly different to that of Mary Ward’s, the essence of her pioneering work continues in Loreto schools throughout the world today.
Loreto St Michael’s is a school where all students are challenged and championed to fulfill their own potential, to live the values of Freedom, Joy, Justice, Sincerity and Truth in all that they do, to become active global citizens, who take part in and contribution to their communities and who strive to make the world in which they live that little bit better “Do good and do it well”.
Our committed teaching and ancillary staff not only provide the structure and backbone of our school but in conjunction with the Loreto Ethos they provide the “spirit” of our school. Respectful relationships between staff and students are paramount to us and provide the basis for excellent Learning and Teaching both in and outside of the classroom. In addition to life in the classroom, St Michael’s students are afforded many opportunities to excel in extra and co-curricular activities, about which you can read more in our “Extra Curricular” section.
Central to the core of St Michael’s is the importance of “Social Justice” and “Student Leadership”. Social Justice permeates all aspects of life in St Michael’s and is never more apparent than in our annual “Mission” and “Social Justice” weeks. In St Michael’s, students are encouraged to become leaders and mentors. We operate an active and vibrant Student Council, Class Captain and Senior Student Leader Programmes as well as the Ember programme but there are always opportunities for students to become involved in school life and contribute to their community, develop in confidence and leadership and follow in the visionary footsteps of Mary Ward.
I hope that our website gives you an insight into all that happens in our school – our school social media accounts are also full of information about all the various activities and events that take place throughout the year and I would encourage you to log on from time to time to stay updated. I encourage any past pupils to join our new Loreto Past Pupil’s Association “Ceangail” so that we can continue to build a strong and lasting St Michael’s community here in Navan.
I hope that you enjoy our website and reading about our school, our values, our ethos and our philosophy of education.
